Hawkers are small sellers of goods who can easily be carried; the word is roughly equivalent to a peddler or discount dealer. In most instances where the word hawker is used, a hawker sells food, handicrafts, or cheap goods. They either advertise in newspapers, advertise in stalls, sell their products directly, or travel from door to sell their wares. While hawkers mostly sell food, some also sell cosmetics and clothing. Most hawkers use vehicles such as motorbikes, tricycles, push-chairs, and wheelchairs to carry goods. Some hawkers are self-employed, while others roam around the Central Business District or the entertainment district of an area. A few hawkers operate a food stall on the sidewalk and sell snacks and foodstuffs, such as Chinese food. Others sell liquor and foreign drinks in small bars. Most of the people who engage in Hawking do it for a living at first, but later as they gain more knowledge and expertise they can try other options as well. A few years back, hawkers from China would arrive in bulk to cater to the needs of the US Army in any war-torn area. These days the trend of hawkers is mostly to carry foodstuffs and groceries from door to door or from one hawkers store to another. Major shopping districts, such as those in Singapore tourist districts, have seen a huge influx of Chinese hawkers in the past few years. There are no Chinese spots here; instead, most of the people come from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. This is partly because hawkers earn a good living by selling local and quality foodstuffs to a global clientele. Today hawkers can be found almost anywhere selling foodstuffs to the locals and tourists. In fact, you will never see hawkers stand devoid of a long line of customers, since this is something that they cannot do without. They are usually found roaming the alleys and streets selling their wares to anyone who will listen. Of course, most hawkers earn enough money to take care of the expenses and overhead, but some also start their own food franchises and sell their own products. The trend of hawkers has spread its wings to hawkers markets and street corners in major US cities such as New York, Miami Beach, and Houston. Such hawkers vendors generally put out their wares not only for the locals to purchase but also for tourists to sample. There is nothing like trying a new hawkers recipe to taste the local fare at home. These days there is hardly any place where you cannot find hawkers stall selling its wares. You can follow our tourist guides at asiaone, so one can get to the market either through foot, car or bike. Bicycles are commonly used since most hawkers tend to sell foodstuffs for very low prices. Tourists on the lookout for cheap and good food can also take advantage of guided bicycle tours. Comments are closed.
